Spain began their UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 campaign with a commanding 5–0 victory over Portugal at Bern’s Stadion Wankdorf, registering the national team’s largest winning margin at a European Championship. Esther González opened the scoring after 90 seconds and doubled her tally just before the interval. Vicky López added a second-minute strike, while captain Alexia Putellas and substitute Cristina Martín-Prieto scored in the 40th and 92nd minutes respectively, giving the 2023 World Cup winners a 4–0 lead at half-time and an emphatic finish. Head coach Montse Tomé managed the result without three regular starters: Ballon d’Or holder Aitana Bonmatí and goalkeeper Cata Coll, both recently ill, remained on the bench, and centre-back Irene Paredes served the final match of a suspension. Stand-in goalkeeper Adriana Nanclares helped secure Spain’s first clean sheet in nine matches. The win moves Spain to the top of Group B on three points, ahead of Italy, Belgium and Portugal. Tomé’s side next face Belgium as they continue their pursuit of a first European crown to add to their recent World Cup and Nations League titles.
