Bluesky has begun rolling out a broad overhaul of its notification system, introducing “Activity Notifications” that let users receive alerts whenever specific accounts publish new posts or replies. The update, which started on 7 July, allows people to tap a bell icon on any profile to activate the alerts, mirroring a capability long offered on X (formerly Twitter) and Meta’s Threads. The release adds extensive controls in the Settings > Notifications menu, where users can independently enable or silence notices for new followers, likes, replies, mentions, quotes, and reposts. Each category can be limited to accounts a user follows, opened to everyone, or turned off entirely. Bluesky has retired its earlier “priority notifications” option; users who relied on that filter must now manually adjust the new settings to achieve the same effect. Account owners may also disable Activity Notifications or restrict them to followers, limiting who can subscribe to their updates. Bluesky says the refinements are aimed at strengthening its real-time news and sports coverage, identified as a growth priority for the service. The company reports more than 34 million active users—still well below larger competitors—but argues that finer-grained alerts will encourage deeper engagement and make the platform more attractive to journalists, leagues, and fans seeking minute-by-minute information.
