Nextdoor unveiled its most comprehensive product overhaul since the neighborhood-focused social network was founded in 2011, rolling out new features designed to turn the platform into an everyday utility rather than an occasional bulletin board. The redesign, introduced on 15 July, centres on three pillars—Alerts, News and Faves—and is accompanied by refreshed branding led by Chief Design Officer Georg Petschnigg, a former New York Times executive. The new Alerts tab displays a real-time, colour-coded map of emergencies such as wildfires, severe storms and power outages. Data are sourced from partners including Weather.com, crisis-detection firm Samdesk, local utilities and public-safety agencies, enabling alerts targeted to specific streets or neighbourhoods. Nextdoor is also integrating professional journalism directly into its feed through agreements with more than 3,500 local publishers across the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. A rotating news carousel and story snippets—roughly 50,000 items at launch—aim to supplement user-generated posts and drive traffic back to local outlets that have struggled to reach audiences elsewhere. A third feature, Faves, uses a proprietary large-language model trained on 15 years of neighbourhood discussions to deliver AI-generated recommendations on everything from plumbers to family-friendly hiking trails. The chatbot debuts in selected U.S. markets and will expand over time. Chief Executive Officer Nirav Tolia, who returned to the role in early 2024, said the upgrades are intended to boost engagement beyond the roughly 25 million weekly users drawn from the platform’s 100 million registered accounts. The relaunch is part of a wider turnaround effort after the company’s share price slumped following its 2021 public listing.
