Google has begun rolling out a software update that lets its Gemini AI chatbot automatically remember details from users’ past conversations. The optional “Personal Context” setting, enabled by default, allows Gemini to tailor suggestions without requiring additional prompts. The feature is reaching users of the Gemini 2.5 Pro model in selected countries from 13 August and will extend to the lighter 2.5 Flash model and more markets in the coming weeks. To ease privacy concerns, Google is also introducing “Temporary Chats.” Conversations started in this mode are excluded from the user’s history, are not used to train Google’s models and are erased after 72 hours, giving an incognito-style option for sensitive queries. The company is updating its data-handling policies at the same time. “Gemini Apps Activity” is being renamed “Keep Activity,” and—if switched on—allows Google to analyse a sample of future uploads such as files or photos to improve services. Users who previously disabled logging will retain that preference and can turn off Personal Context at any time via settings. The enhancements bring Gemini closer to rivals that already offer chat history memory, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, while Google stresses that guardrails and user controls remain central as conversational AI becomes more personalised.
Gemini is also getting a ChatGPT-style Temporary Chat window. Conversations made here won't influence future chats or show up in recent history. https://t.co/zw5xxlpu6C
