Google has expanded the language support for its NotebookLM platform, enabling its Audio Overviews feature to generate podcast-style audio summaries in over 50 languages, including Hindi, Japanese, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Bahasa Malaysia, and Marathi. Some reports indicate support for up to 76 languages. Previously limited to English, this feature now allows users to upload documents, web pages, or other sources in any language and receive audio summaries in their preferred language. Audio Overviews uses two AI-generated hosts in a professional dual-host format to discuss and contextualize the uploaded material in a conversational manner. The feature is accessible via NotebookLM's web interface and is being rolled out to the NotebookLM mobile app for Android and iOS, with support for offline playback and background listening. The Output Language setting can be found in the top-right corner of the settings menu. The new language capabilities are currently in beta, and Google recommends users verify non-English audio for potential inaccuracies. There are no time limits on the generated audio. The expansion aims to make research, study, and content creation more accessible globally, allowing teachers, students, and creators to generate audio content and study guides in multiple languages. A Gemini-powered chatbot is also available to answer questions about the content. In addition to the language update, NotebookLM has introduced features such as automatic source discovery, mind map visualizations, and improved support for complex PDFs, including images and graphics. Separately, Google has launched 'Little Language Lessons,' a set of three experimental AI tools designed to help users learn new languages. These tools, available via Google Labs, use Gemini AI to provide personalized phrase learning, teach colloquial language and slang, and identify real-world objects through a camera interface, supporting a wide range of languages.

NotebookLM's Audio Overview launched in Sep'24, and quite literally everybody loved it and everyone was talking about it. It has been 8 months and not only do we not have an API, we are still "a few weeks" from the BETA app. I have not heard anyone talk about it in months. https://t.co/SlW3zk2C4x https://t.co/Hq3rGwjuUi
