Alphabet’s YouTube TV and Fox Corp. avoided an immediate blackout of Fox-owned channels by signing a last-minute short-term extension on Wednesday, minutes after their carriage agreement expired at 5 p.m. Eastern. The temporary pact keeps the Fox broadcast network, Fox News, Fox Sports and regional affiliates on the streaming bundle while the companies continue negotiations on a long-term contract. Roughly 9 million YouTube TV subscribers would have lost access to this weekend’s marquee sports programming—including Saturday’s Texas–Ohio State college football opener and upcoming NFL games—had the channels gone dark. YouTube TV had pledged a $10 monthly bill credit if a blackout lasted for an extended period. The standoff centers on carriage fees. Google says Fox is demanding payments “far higher than what partners with comparable content receive,” while Fox contends the tech company is using its “outsized influence” to push terms that are “out of step with the marketplace.” Neither side disclosed financial details or the length of the extension. The impasse drew political attention: Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr urged Google to “get a deal done,” although the agency has no jurisdiction over streaming distributors. Separately, YouTube TV revealed plans to add One America News later this year, a move analysts view as leverage in the Fox talks. Both companies said they remain in discussions and hope to reach a longer-term agreement before the provisional arrangement lapses.
