Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has released a comprehensive set of 47 forensic investigation reports concerning corruption and misconduct within the Gauteng Provincial Government. The reports, compiled from multiple departmental investigations, revealed that the province lost millions of rand due to improper conduct. As a result, 88 public servants faced consequence management, and 55 criminal complaints were filed with the police. Lesufi emphasized that Members of the Executive Council (MECs) will be responsible for implementing the recommendations from these reports. In a related development, the City of Ekurhuleni is conducting a threat assessment for its audit staff following the assassination of Mpho Mafole, the city’s group divisional head for corporate and forensic audits. Mafole was shot and killed along the R23 while returning from a meeting in Alberton. The city and Parliament’s cooperative governance committee have expressed shock and sadness over the killing. Separately, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy announced infrastructure investments, including a R21 billion allocation to the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) for development aimed at improving passenger safety and comfort. Creecy also outlined the Rail Reform Agenda, which seeks to re-establish rail as the primary mode for passenger and freight transport, noting that the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) restored 35 of 40 service lanes in the past financial year. The department is managing the current state of the Transnet network while awaiting the implementation of the Public-Private Partnership (PSP) program.
