Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, a businessman and tenderpreneur linked to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, was found in possession of a cellphone during a raid at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre. Following the discovery, Matlala was transferred to the C-Max section of the prison, and the confiscated cellphone was handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation. Matlala is currently awaiting trial on charges including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering related to an alleged attempted hit on his former partner, actress Tebogo Thobejane. He and co-accused appeared at the Alexandra Magistrates' Court, where the case was postponed to August 26, 2025. Matlala is also known for securing a R360 million SAPS tender that was later withdrawn. His legal proceedings and alleged involvement in fraud, violent crime, and high-level corruption have attracted considerable attention in South African politics and crime reporting.
