A 25-year-old Chinese citizen surnamed Zhong has been rescued from Myanmar after being lured out of China by a bogus magazine photo-shoot offer, the Chinese embassy in Bangkok said on 4 July. Zhong, a model from Guangdong who disappeared on 9 June after landing in Bangkok, was freed through coordinated efforts by Chinese, Thai and Myanmar authorities. The embassy urged Chinese nationals to be wary of overseas job offers that promise unusually high pay. The case has underscored a wider regional campaign against telecom-scam and human-trafficking syndicates operating along the Myanmar–Thailand border. At a ministerial-level meeting in Nay Pyi Taw, China, Myanmar and Thailand agreed to intensify joint operations aimed at dismantling scam compounds in Myawaddy and other hotspots and to arrest all remaining suspects. China’s Ministry of Public Security said more than 5,400 Chinese nationals involved in fraud in Myawaddy have already been repatriated since the start of 2025.
