Meta has removed over 6.8 million WhatsApp accounts linked to criminal scam operations worldwide during the first half of 2025. These accounts were primarily associated with scam centers, many operating in Southeast Asia, and involved in fraudulent schemes such as pyramid schemes and cryptocurrency investment scams, including pig butchering scams. To further protect users, WhatsApp introduced new safety features, including a "Safety Overview" tool that provides information about new group chats, such as their creation date and details, to warn users before joining potentially suspicious groups. Additionally, the platform now alerts users about potential scams in group chat messages and helps identify scam messages more effectively. These measures aim to combat the exploitation of economic anxiety by scammers and enhance user security on the messaging app.
