Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held bilateral talks with his Australian counterpart Penny Wong on the sidelines of the 58th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, according to official statements released on 10 July. Fidan’s visit also included a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as well as separate discussions with the foreign ministers of Laos, Brunei and Singapore. The talks were part of Turkey’s participation in the three-day ASEAN gathering, which brings together the bloc’s 10 member states and external partners to address regional security and economic cooperation. No details of agreements were disclosed, but Turkey and the Southeast Asian nations described the sessions as opportunities to expand political and economic ties.
