Spanish security forces arrested nine North African migrants after their rigid-hulled boat ran onto Sotilla Beach in Granada on Sunday, scattering holiday-makers as passengers leapt into shallow water and attempted to flee through crowds. Bathers pursued several of the migrants before Guardia Civil, Policía Nacional and local officers cordoned off the area and completed the detentions in nearby streets and campgrounds. Sub-delegate of the Government in Granada José Antonio Montilla confirmed that all nine detainees were transferred to the Centre for Temporary Attention to Foreigners (CATE) in the port of Motril, where their expulsion orders are being processed. Authorities are still searching for a possible tenth passenger named by some of the detainees. Montilla noted that the incident is only the second unauthorised landing recorded on the Granada coastline this year. Nationally, 18,657 people have reached Spanish shores by sea up to 31 July, a decline of more than 46% from the same period in 2024, according to Interior Ministry data.
