Spanish police have arrested a 20-year-old man accused of setting a 17-year-old girl on fire in the early hours of Wednesday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The victim, whom police believe was in a relationship with the suspect, remains in critical condition with burns covering roughly 95% of her body. Emergency services were alerted at about 04:00 local time to a blaze in a squat on Calle Roque Nublo, in the La Isleta district. Firefighters extinguished the flames, while medics transferred both the girl and the suspect—who showed signs of smoke inhalation—to the Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín. Authorities plan to move the teenager to a specialist burn unit in Sevilla once her condition allows. The Policía Nacional has opened an investigation into the assault and is treating gender-based violence as the main line of inquiry. Officers have not yet been able to question either party due to their medical condition.
