Real Madrid dismissed head coach Chus Mateo on 1 July, less than a week after the team swept Valencia 3-0 to secure the Spanish ACB League title. Mateo, who had one year remaining on his contract, departs having collected six trophies—one Euroleague, two domestic leagues, one Copa del Rey and two Supercopas—during three seasons at the helm. The club has turned to Sergio Scariolo, Spain’s men’s national team coach, to fill the vacancy. Scariolo, who previously led Real Madrid from 1999 to 2002, is expected to take over once his commitments with the national side conclude. On 2 July Scariolo announced a 15-player preliminary squad for the Eurobasket tournament, which will run from 27 August to 14 September across Latvia, Cyprus, Finland and Poland. He simultaneously confirmed that the championship will be his final tournament in charge of Spain, ending a decade-long second stint that yielded two Eurobasket titles (2015, 2022), the 2019 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic bronze. Spanish Basketball Federation president Elisa Aguilar thanked the 63-year-old Italian for “his dedication”, while the federation begins its search for a successor. Real Madrid has not yet formalised Scariolo’s appointment, but club and federation officials indicated that negotiations are advancing.
