Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights has asked the public prosecutor to investigate whether FC Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal breached disability-rights legislation by hiring people with dwarfism to entertain guests at his 18th-birthday party. The event took place on 12 July at a rented estate in Olivella, about 50 kilometres north-west of Barcelona, and was attended by team-mates and music celebrities. The request follows a complaint from the Association of People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias with Dwarfism (ADEE), which argues that using performers with dwarfism for amusement violates Spain’s General Law on the Rights of People with Disabilities and perpetuates harmful stereotypes. Jesús Martín Blanco, the ministry’s director-general for disability rights, said the case shows that “the law is for everyone, for the humble and for the powerful.” One of the four performers told Catalan radio station RAC1 that “no one disrespected us” and urged critics to “let us work,” saying their engagement was legal and voluntary. Yamal and his representatives have not commented publicly. Prosecutors are now examining whether the party infringed disability protections; potential penalties will depend on their findings.
