President Donald Trump on Thursday demanded the immediate resignation of Intel Chief Executive Officer Lip-Bu Tan, declaring in a Truth Social post that the executive is “highly conflicted” and that “there is no other solution to this problem.” Tan, who became CEO in March, has drawn scrutiny from Republican lawmakers over his past investments in hundreds of Chinese technology companies, including several tied to the People’s Liberation Army. In a letter this week to Intel’s board, Senator Tom Cotton cited those holdings and a recent guilty plea by Cadence Design Systems—where Tan was chief executive until 2021—for illegally exporting technology to a Chinese military university. The presidential salvo rattled investors: Intel shares fell as much as 5% in U.S. pre-market trading and were still about 3% lower by midday, erasing the stock’s year-to-date gain. The controversy deepens challenges for the chipmaker, which is pursuing a multibillion-dollar turnaround and has secured roughly $8 billion in government grants under the CHIPS and Science Act. Intel has said it will respond directly to Cotton’s inquiries and affirmed its commitment to U.S. national security, but it has not yet commented on Trump’s demand. The call for Tan’s ouster follows the president’s threat of a 100% tariff on imported semiconductors, signaling intensified political pressure on the industry to expand manufacturing on American soil.
