Turkish authorities have arrested Ismail Abdo, the 35-year-old dual Swedish-Turkish national who tops Sweden’s most-wanted list, during overnight raids across several cities on 4 July. Abdo—nicknamed “The Strawberry” and subject to an Interpol red notice—is accused of orchestrating large-scale drug trafficking and ordering violent attacks while leading the Rumba crime gang from abroad. Swedish police confirmed the detention and said they are in contact with their Turkish counterparts, according to spokesperson Caroline Wiklund. The Istanbul-led operation, carried out with input from Swedish and Norwegian investigators, resulted in 19 arrests. Officers seized about 1.5 billion Turkish lira (roughly $38 million) in assets, including 20 vehicles, 51 pieces of real estate and stakes in 13 companies, state broadcaster TRT reported. Four additional suspects remain at large. Abdo’s capture marks the latest development in a feud between the Rumba gang and the rival Foxtrot network, a turf war blamed for more than a dozen deaths in Sweden since 2023, including the murder of Abdo’s mother. Stockholm’s centre-right government, elected on pledges to curb gang violence, welcomed the arrest, but Abdo’s Turkish citizenship is expected to complicate Sweden’s efforts to secure his extradition.
