Turkish authorities have detained businessman Zeki Doruk, owner of the 800-store HAKMAR supermarket chain and the TATBAK confectionery brand, in a nationwide operation targeting the current financial network of the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ). The raid, carried out on 15 July by the National Intelligence Organization, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Istanbul Financial Crimes Department in nine provinces, also led to the arrest of 25 other suspects. During a search of Doruk’s residence, investigators opened a locked safe containing gold, jewellery and a handwritten will in which Doruk bequeathed his entire personal fortune and the assets of HAKMAR, TATBAK and his other businesses to FETÖ. The document instructed that the companies’ zakat payments be channelled to the organisation under the guise of the “Hizmet movement”. Police also found a religious invocation believed to have been penned by FETÖ’s exiled leader Fetullah Gülen. Prosecutors said Doruk had deliberately given the wrong code to HAKMAR’s corporate safe at the time of his arrest, allegedly to impede the investigation. A court has appointed trustees to manage HAKMAR, TATBAK and 20 additional firms in Doruk’s portfolio, which spans food, agriculture, education and construction. The inquiry is examining regular fund transfers Doruk is suspected of making to FETÖ operatives inside Türkiye.
