Lausanne faced a third consecutive night of street violence after a 17-year-old died when the stolen scooter he was riding struck a wall while he was fleeing police in the early hours of Sunday. Emergency services attempted to resuscitate the youth, a Swiss resident, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said roughly 100 masked youths gathered on Sunday night, setting fire to rubbish containers and damaging a bus. The following evening the crowd grew to an estimated 150-200 people who erected burning barricades and clashed with riot officers. Authorities deployed additional units on Tuesday evening in an effort to prevent further escalation. The unrest has intensified scrutiny of the Lausanne police, already under pressure after the suspension of four officers on Monday for sharing racist, sexist and discriminatory messages in private WhatsApp groups. Mayor Grégoire Junod acknowledged a “systemic discrimination issue” within the force and promised an external review while urging calm in the city of 145,000.
