On the evening of August 28, 2025, in Pejompongan, Central Jakarta, a tactical vehicle (rantis) operated by the Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) of the Indonesian National Police fatally struck Affan Kurniawan, a 21-year-old online motorcycle taxi (ojek online or ojol) driver. Affan, known as the breadwinner for his family, died following the incident that occurred after a demonstration in Jakarta. The event sparked widespread protests, including actions by students and ojol drivers in various cities such as Jakarta, Solo, Yogyakarta, Bandung, and Makassar. The protests led to road closures in Central Jakarta and disruptions to public transportation services, including route adjustments by Transjakarta buses and normal operations maintained by MRT Jakarta. Kapolri General Listyo Sigit Prabowo publicly apologized for the incident, expressing deep regret and promising accountability. He ordered the Internal Affairs Division (Propam Polri) to investigate the case thoroughly. Seven Brimob officers involved in the incident have been detained and are undergoing examination by the Propam division at the National Police Headquarters. Kapolda Metro Jaya Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri also apologized and pledged a professional and firm response to the case. The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has deployed a team to investigate the incident and issued nine recommendations related to the case. Political and religious leaders, including Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, former Governor Anies Baswedan, Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council Kyai Anwar Iskandar, and President Prabowo Subianto, have expressed condolences and called for justice. President Prabowo assured support for Affan's family. Affan's funeral was held at Karet Bivak Public Cemetery in Central Jakarta on August 29, 2025, with hundreds of ojol drivers escorting the procession. The incident has drawn attention from domestic and international media, highlighting tensions between law enforcement and civilians during demonstrations. The Indonesian Marine Corps has been deployed to assist security at protests near the Brimob headquarters in Kwitang, Jakarta.
