Clashes Between Syrian Democratic Forces and Government in Deir ez-Zour, Hostage-Taking Amid Fighting Along Euphrates

Tensions between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian government have escalated, with several deadly clashes reported in eastern Aleppo and across the Euphrates River in Deir ez-Zour. Fighting intensified last night involving militants loyal to al-Joulani, who engaged in battles against the SDF and other local groups. Additionally, tribal gunmen in Deir ez-Zour took four to six SDF fighters hostage. The SDF has attributed the kidnapping to ISIS, a designation that may worsen tensions as some tribes in SDF-controlled areas have recently expressed opposition to the SDF.
