Major U.S. and international retailers have rolled out their Labor Day promotions almost a week ahead of schedule, dangling some of the deepest price cuts seen since Prime Day. Amazon is headlining the push with discounts of up to 40% on hundreds of products, including a 35% reduction on its new Fire HD 8 tablet, steep price breaks on Fire TV streaming devices and Echo smart speakers, and a $500 markdown on Samsung’s 65-inch S95F OLED television. Competitors are matching the move. Walmart has dropped Apple’s four-year-old M1 MacBook Air to $599 through Aug. 30, while Best Buy is promising as much as $200 in trade-in credit on Google’s just-unveiled Pixel Watch 4 and has taken more than 60% off select HP Chromebooks and iBuypower gaming PCs. In India, Amazon has cut the iPhone 15 by Rs 9,000, and electronics chain Croma is selling the M2 MacBook Air for Rs 82,990. Online deal trackers say many of the promotions are at—or below—Black Friday lows. Retailers are pulling forward the holiday to lock in sales before further tariff-driven price increases. Earlier this month the United States imposed a 15% levy on products from Japan and South Korea and a 20% tax on goods from Taiwan, Vietnam and Bangladesh, following April’s 145% duty on Chinese imports. Sony has already raised the PlayStation 5 to $549.99, underscoring the likelihood that other consumer electronics will become costlier as new inventories arrive. Analysts expect the most aggressive discounts to continue through the Labor Day weekend, especially on laptops, televisions and wearables tied to the back-to-school season. With inventories limited and tariffs pressuring margins, merchants are urging shoppers to buy now rather than wait for Black Friday.
