About 35 cars of a Union Pacific freight train derailed at roughly 2 p.m. local time on 12 August near the Coalville Road bridge, about two miles east of Gordon in rural Palo Pinto County, Texas, the railroad and local officials said. Palo Pinto County Emergency Services District 1 reported no injuries or evacuations. Although some of the derailed cars were believed to be carrying hazardous materials, authorities said none were leaking. The crash sparked small grass and brush fires that firefighters contained while hazardous-materials teams monitored the scene. Union Pacific (UNP) has dispatched environmental and wreck-recovery crews and is treating the site as a hazmat incident. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation, and officials expect the area to remain an active work zone for several days while damaged cars are removed and track repairs completed.
