Fugitive former Turkish prosecutor Zekeriya Öz was filmed on 6 July carrying the coffin of Muhammet Yakut at a funeral held in a cemevi in Duisburg, western Germany. The brief public appearance is the first confirmed sighting of Öz in several years. Öz, who led a series of high-profile corruption investigations in 2013 before being accused of membership in the Gülen movement (labelled FETÖ by Ankara), fled Turkey in 2015. He remains the subject of an Interpol red notice and a Turkish arrest warrant on charges that include attempting to overthrow the government. The deceased, 44-year-old Yakut, had gained notoriety through social-media videos and was being sought in Turkey for alleged organised-crime activities. German authorities said he died last week from a suspected drug overdose. Footage of Öz’s presence in Duisburg is expected to rekindle Ankara’s long-standing demand that Berlin detain and extradite him, although German officials have not yet commented publicly on the matter.
