The Albuquerque Police Department on 24 June released portions of body-camera footage from its investigation of a 21 February crash that has led to a misdemeanor charge against former UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones. The video, obtained by the Albuquerque Journal, records an officer speaking by phone with a man the passenger in the wrecked car identifies as Jones. The caller slurs his words, refuses to identify himself and says, “You won’t be the first guy this year that I’ve threatened … My brothers, they kill people for way less,” prompting the officer to request backup. According to the criminal complaint, the woman—found intoxicated and partially unclothed in the passenger seat—told police that Jones had been driving, fled the scene on foot and later called her. Investigators accuse Jones, 37, of leaving the scene of an accident but have not filed additional charges related to the alleged threats. A bond arraignment is scheduled for 24 July in Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court. Jones’ attorney, Christopher Dodd, said the fighter was not driving and called the case “strange and unwarranted,” arguing that police are targeting his client and over-reached by seeking Jones’ phone records during what began as a traffic inquiry. The department said officers pursued the matter because the public-safety aide believed he had been threatened and investigators “took the incident seriously” before seeking charges. The legal dispute surfaces days after Jones announced his retirement from mixed martial arts, relinquishing the heavyweight championship he won in 2024. The former champion has faced previous allegations ranging from driving-related offenses to domestic battery, though several past charges were dropped or reduced.
