Ilia Topuria has been elevated to the top of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s pound-for-pound rankings, dethroning Islam Makhachev in the promotion’s first list since UFC 317. The update, released 1 July, ends Makhachev’s 602-day stay at No. 1 and confirms Topuria as the sport’s consensus leading fighter across all weight classes. The 28-year-old Spaniard of Georgian heritage earned the promotion after knocking out former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira in 2 minutes 37 seconds to claim the vacant 155-pound belt at UFC 317 in Las Vegas on Saturday. The victory stretched Topuria’s perfect record to 17-0 and made him the first undefeated athlete to hold UFC titles in two divisions, having previously reigned at featherweight. Behind Topuria, bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili moved to third in the men’s pound-for-pound standings, while flyweight title-holder Alexandre Pantoja climbed four places to fifth after submitting Kai Kara-France on the same card. Oliveira dropped two spots to 15th. Reactions were mixed. Former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman said Topuria’s dominance across two divisions justifies the new ranking, whereas Makhachev’s camp insisted the Russian remains “the real P4P king.” Topuria has yet to announce his first title defence, but potential opponents include Makhachev at welterweight or lightweight contender Paddy Pimblett.
Islam Makhachev was on course to become the second longest reigning pound-for-pound UFC fighter in history… until Ilia Topuria took the throne 😏👑 https://t.co/WH1mRE1Uwm
Islam Makhachev's manager says Islam Makhachev is 'the real P4P king', not Ilia Topuria "[Islam] beat prime Volk on a 22 fight win streak. Beat prime Oliveira on a 12 fight win streak." https://t.co/t54bATKH5l
