New opinion surveys conducted for U.S. broadcasters CNN and CBS show a sharp change in Ukrainian public sentiment toward the war with Russia. Roughly 69%–70% of respondents now favor ending the conflict through a negotiated settlement, compared with just over 20% at the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022. Support for continuing to fight until a complete Ukrainian victory has plunged to 24%, down from 73% recorded in 2022. Only one-quarter of those polled believe the war will end soon, and optimism about near-term NATO membership for Ukraine has fallen to 32% from 64% three years ago. The shift in attitudes comes ahead of a planned meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, former U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders later this week, where the future course of the conflict is expected to dominate the agenda.
UKRAINE: Despite 70% of Ukrainians supporting a negotiated peace deal up from just over 20% at the start of the war the people have no way to make their voices heard. No free speech, free press, or elections. https://t.co/A7tvaECPAC
CBS: “Nearly 70% of Ukrainians now support a negotiated peace deal — that's up from just over 20% at the start of the invasion.” https://t.co/QdAnyQk6U6
