Russia unleashed one of its heaviest aerial barrages of the year on Ukraine overnight into Aug. 21, firing 574 attack drones and 40 missiles, the Ukrainian Air Force said. The salvo, the biggest since mid-July, targeted mainly western regions far from the front line. Local authorities said the strikes killed at least one person in the city of Lviv and wounded about 15 nationwide. In Mukachevo, a blaze broke out at a large electronics plant, injuring 12 workers and forcing the night-shift staff to shelter in on-site bunkers. Dozens of residential buildings were damaged in Lviv, Lutsk and surrounding areas. Kyiv’s air-defence network reported shooting down 546 drones and 31 missiles, but the scale of the attack underscored Russia’s ability to penetrate deep inside Ukrainian territory despite continued deliveries of Western air-defence systems. The assault came days after U.S.-mediated talks in Washington and Alaska aimed at reviving peace negotiations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the strikes, urging allies to tighten sanctions and accelerate security guarantees as diplomatic efforts continue.
