Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defences intercepted or destroyed 112 Ukrainian drones across eight regions and the occupied Crimean peninsula overnight into Saturday. Despite the interceptions, officials in three regions reported fatalities. A drone strike killed one person in the Rostov region on the Ukrainian border, while separate incidents in the Penza and Samara regions each claimed a life after debris triggered fires, local governors said. The attacks came a day after Kyiv observed mourning for 31 civilians, including five children, killed in Russia’s deadliest aerial assault on the Ukrainian capital this year. That strike, which involved more than 300 drones and eight missiles, wounded over 150 people and led Ukrainian officials to renew calls for stronger international support. While both sides stepped up drone warfare, U.S. President Donald Trump has given President Vladimir Putin until 8 August to show progress in peace efforts, warning of additional economic sanctions. The latest exchanges underscore the intensifying tit-for-tat strikes even as diplomatic prospects remain stalled.
