Russian forces dropped a 500-kilogram guided bomb on a busy shopping centre and outdoor market in Dobropillia, a mining town in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, at about 17:20 local time on Wednesday, regional governor Vadym Filashkin said. The strike killed at least two civilians and wounded 27 others. Filashkin reported that the blast destroyed or damaged 54 retail pavilions, 304 apartments in 13 multi-storey buildings and eight vehicles. Rescue crews were still dousing fires and clearing rubble late Wednesday, with officials warning that additional casualties could be found. President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced the attack as “simply horrific,” saying it lacked any military purpose. Dobropillia lies roughly 20 km from the eastern frontline and has faced repeated bombardment; a March missile and drone attack on the town killed 11 people. The latest strike comes amid an uptick in Russian aerial assaults on population centres far from the immediate combat zone.
