A Russian Shahed drone barrage struck the centre of Kharkiv early on 11 July, damaging a maternity hospital and several other buildings in Ukraine’s second-largest city, local officials said. The regional prosecutor’s office reported at least nine people injured, while Governor Oleh Syniehubov added that one person was killed and five others wounded in separate shelling elsewhere in Kharkiv Oblast. Mothers and newborns were evacuated after explosions shattered windows in the hospital’s delivery and surgery wards, Mayor Ihor Terekhov wrote on Telegram. Prosecutors said three women who had recently given birth and their infants were treated for acute stress reactions. A nearby dental clinic, an educational facility and eight residential buildings also sustained damage. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike, noting that women in labour were among the injured, and renewed appeals to Western partners for additional air-defence systems. The attack follows a sharp increase in Russian aerial assaults: the UN human-rights mission said Russia launched 10 times more drones and missiles in June than a year earlier, making last month the deadliest for Ukrainian civilians in three years. Emergency crews were clearing debris and assessing structural damage, and Ukrainian investigators have opened a war-crimes probe into the targeting of medical facilities, which are protected under international law.
