Russian forces carried out a fresh wave of ballistic-missile and drone attacks across Ukraine late on 17 August, Ukrainian officials said. A missile hit a residential neighborhood in Kharkiv, wounding at least 11 people, among them a 13-year-old girl, according to regional governor Oleh Synehubov. In Novoyakovlivka, Zaporizhzhia region, a 15-year-old boy was killed and four members of his family were injured when a home was struck. On the eastern front, Kyiv reported continued progress in its counter-offensive. The National Guard’s 1st Corps ‘Azov’ and supporting units said they cleared six settlements in the Donetsk region between 4 and 16 August. Ukrainian figures put Russian losses during that period at 910 killed, 335 wounded and 37 captured; Moscow has not commented on the numbers. Heavy fighting also persists around Pokrovsk. The city has been under Russian assault for 13 months, but Ukrainian social-media reports on Sunday claimed local forces had retaken the strategic rail hub—an assertion that could not be independently verified.
