Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he will travel to Washington on Monday, Aug. 18, to meet U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelensky accepted the invitation during a phone call on Saturday that he said lasted more than an hour and a half, part of which included European and NATO leaders. The White House visit comes two days after Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska ended without a ceasefire or a broader peace agreement for the war that began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Trump characterised the Alaska talks as “productive” but repeated that “there’s no deal until there’s a deal.” Zelensky said he and Trump will “discuss all the details regarding ending the killing and the war” and endorsed Trump’s suggestion of a trilateral meeting involving the U.S., Ukraine and Russia. He added that European participation is essential to secure reliable security guarantees for Kyiv. Trump confirmed Zelensky’s Oval Office visit and said that, if the discussion is fruitful, a subsequent meeting with Putin could be arranged.
