Zelensky to Meet Trump at White House Monday After Unresolved Putin Summit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he will travel to Washington on Monday, 18 August, for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. The White House confirmed Zelensky is expected in the Oval Office on Monday afternoon. The invitation followed Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska on 15 August. That meeting ran about two-and-a-half hours and ended without a cease-fire or other concrete agreement on the Ukraine war. Zelensky, who was briefed by Trump in a “long, meaningful” call on Saturday, said the Washington talks will focus on “ending the killing and the war.” Trump indicated he hopes to schedule a subsequent meeting that would bring Putin into the negotiations, but neither side has outlined conditions for a settlement or additional sanctions.
