Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is due to meet British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. local time, according to Starmer’s office. The London talks come less than 24 hours before U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin hold a highly anticipated summit at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. Starmer, speaking after a virtual call on Wednesday with Trump, Zelensky and several European leaders, said there is now a “viable chance” of achieving a ceasefire in Ukraine. He reiterated that any settlement must respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity and signalled that Britain and its partners are prepared to tighten sanctions on Moscow if negotiations falter. Zelensky has spent the week lobbying allies in Germany and the United Kingdom to dissuade Washington from accepting territorial concessions to Russia. He told reporters he had warned Trump that Putin is “bluffing” about wanting peace. Trump, for his part, has threatened “severe consequences” if Putin does not agree to end the conflict and said Friday’s talks are intended to “set the table” for a follow-up meeting that could include Zelensky.
