A U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet from Strike Fighter Squadron 83 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the Virginia coast on Wednesday during a routine training flight. The pilot ejected at 9:53 a.m. Eastern time and was recovered by search-and-rescue teams at 11:21 a.m. before being taken to a hospital for evaluation, the Navy said. The aircraft, which remains in the water, was operating from Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach. The Navy has not disclosed the pilot’s condition or identified a possible cause, and a formal investigation is under way. The incident is the sixth loss of an F-18-series jet in the last ten months, a string that has included crashes near Washington state, Southern California and the Red Sea. A single-seat Super Hornet costs about $67 million to produce.
