A single-engine Socata TBM 700 carrying a pilot and three passengers crashed while attempting to land at Kalispell City Airport in northwest Montana at about 2 p.m. on Monday, authorities said. The aircraft skidded along the runway and struck an unoccupied plane, triggering a large fireball and sending thick black smoke over the city-owned airfield. Kalispell Fire Chief Jay Hagen said all four people on the incoming plane evacuated on their own; two were treated at the scene for minor injuries and released. No one was aboard the parked aircraft. Flames spread to a nearby grassy area before firefighters from Kalispell, Evergreen, Smith Valley and Whitefish contained the blaze with foam within minutes. Kalispell Police Chief Jordan Venezio and the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that several aircraft were damaged and that the TBM 700, built in 2011 and registered to Meter Sky LLC of Pullman, Washington, was destroyed. Portions of the runway were temporarily closed for cleanup and inspection. The FAA has opened an investigation into the cause of the accident.
