A Reuters investigation has revealed that 46 of the 50 top US law firms have removed or altered web references to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, with 17 firms revising their pro bono descriptions to omit contentious areas such as immigration. At least three firms have incorporated language aligning with former President Donald Trump's agenda. This shift comes amid pressure from the Trump administration, which has led 27 out of 33 liberal-leaning US civic groups surveyed to express concerns that future legal assistance could be jeopardized. Fourteen civil rights groups reported that law firms they rely on for legal challenges are hesitating, keeping representation confidential, or declining cases due to this pressure. A pro bono director from a leading firm confirmed that their organization now prefers to keep its assistance confidential rather than publicly partnering with advocacy groups as before. While many firms have scaled back litigation against the government during Trump's second term, two major firms, Milbank and Skadden, continue to challenge the administration in court despite agreements to avoid punitive executive action. During Trump's first term, 20 of the 100 highest-grossing US law firms sued the administration on politically sensitive issues such as immigration and regulation, but such litigation has sharply declined in his second term. This retreat from pro bono and civil rights work reflects a strategic calculation by law firms wary of political backlash. In response to this environment, a group of former Department of Justice lawyers and major law firms launched the Washington Litigation Group, a nonprofit aimed at providing free legal representation opposing Trump administration actions. Additionally, Florida's Attorney General has taken a confrontational stance against law firms over DEI initiatives, and Paul Weiss faces potential repercussions for representing a Black church in a lawsuit against the Proud Boys, highlighting ongoing tensions between legal advocacy and political pressures.
