A new nationwide survey by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds crime has become President Donald Trump’s strongest policy issue even as overall opinion of his presidency remains mixed. The poll, conducted Aug. 21-25 among 1,182 adults, shows 81 percent of respondents view crime as a “major problem” in large cities. Fifty-three percent say they approve of the way Trump is handling crime, out-performing his ratings on the economy, immigration and foreign policy. His overall job approval stands at 45 percent—up five points since July—marking the highest level the AP-NORC series has recorded for the president’s second term. Public support for the administration’s hard-line approach has limits. While 55 percent of adults consider it acceptable for the U.S. military or National Guard to assist local police forces, an identical share say it is either “somewhat” or “completely” unacceptable for the federal government to take direct control of municipal police departments. Only about one-third back such takeovers. The findings come after Trump dispatched National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., and placed the city’s police under temporary federal oversight, moves he says could be replicated in other urban centers. Views on those steps divide sharply along partisan lines: nearly all Republicans call urban crime a major issue and mostly endorse the president’s tactics, while Democrats largely oppose federal intervention.
