Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser on Wednesday credited President Donald Trump’s three-week federal law-enforcement surge with sharply reducing crime in the nation’s capital. “We greatly appreciate the surge of officers that enhance what MPD has been able to do,” she told reporters, singling out carjackings as the city’s most troubling offense last year. Police data released at the briefing show carjackings plunged 87 percent in the 20 days since the 7 Aug deployment compared with the same period in 2024. Violent crime is down 45 percent and overall reported crime has fallen 15 percent. The mayor said fewer gun crimes and homicides are helping neighborhoods “feel safer and are safer.” Roughly 2,200 National Guard troops and additional agents from the FBI, DEA, ATF and other federal agencies are patrolling the district and assisting the Metropolitan Police Department under a public-safety emergency declared by Trump. Bowser noted that while the added manpower improves accountability, some residents worry the expanded federal presence strains community trust. The initial order covers 30 days, and city officials said the reinforcement might not be needed beyond that window. The crackdown coincides with an uptick in the president’s standing on the issue. An AP-NORC survey conducted 21–25 Aug found 53 percent of U.S. adults approve of Trump’s handling of crime, and overall job approval climbed five points to 45 percent, the highest of his second term in that poll. Eighty-one percent of respondents said crime is a major problem in large cities, underscoring the political weight of the issue as the White House weighs similar interventions elsewhere.

If Trump really cares about crime, why is his DOJ cutting programs that reduce it? @MaryEllenKlas has a theory (via @opinion) https://t.co/JQX3m2nfR0
