U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it arrested 11 non-citizens convicted of sex crimes during a targeted operation in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area. The sweep, conducted between June 6 and June 11 and announced on July 9, focused on Laotian and Thai nationals who had previously been found guilty of offenses that include crimes against children, according to the agency. ICE officials used the announcement to criticize Minnesota’s sanctuary-style limits on cooperation with federal immigration authorities. The agency said those policies, championed by Governor Tim Walz, had impeded earlier efforts to detain the offenders after they served their criminal sentences.
