Center-left think tank Third Way has circulated a memo warning Democratic leaders that some of the party’s rhetoric is alienating swing voters. The document, dated 22 Aug 2025 and shared with congressional and campaign aides, lists 45 words and phrases the group says should be dropped from public messaging. Among the flagged terms are “birthing person,” “justice-involved individual,” “microaggression,” “privilege” and “triggering.” The memo describes the language as “therapy-speak, seminar-ese and hyper-correctness” that “puts a wall between us and everyday people of all races, religions and ethnicities.” Third Way’s analysis notes that several of the expressions have appeared in Biden administration materials, underscoring what it calls a widening gap between progressive activists and mainstream voters. Republican strategists have made similar critiques for years, but the memo represents one of the most explicit acknowledgments from within Democratic ranks. The think tank is urging Democrats to use simpler, more familiar wording rather than abandoning their policy goals, arguing that improved communication is essential to regaining credibility with moderate and working-class constituencies.
