The U.S. State Department said it is scrutinising the records of all 55 million foreigners who hold valid U.S. visas, broadening what it calls a system of “continuous vetting” aimed at identifying deportable violations. The agency told the Associated Press that visas can be revoked at any time if holders are found to have overstayed, committed crimes, threatened public safety, engaged in terrorism or supported designated terrorist groups. Officials said the review will pull data from law-enforcement, immigration and social-media records, a process they acknowledged will be time-consuming. Since President Donald Trump began his second term in January, the department has already cancelled more than 6,000 student visas—about four times the year-earlier pace—including roughly 4,000 for criminal infractions and 200–300 for terrorism-related activity. The sweep marks a significant expansion of earlier efforts that had mainly targeted student and exchange-visitor categories and follows the administration’s pledge to tighten enforcement of both illegal and legal immigration pathways. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday separately halted the issuance of new worker visas for commercial truck drivers, citing road-safety concerns and competition with U.S. motorists. Most short-stay tourists from 40 countries in the Visa Waiver Program are unaffected, but the review covers the overwhelming majority of long-term visitors, workers and students from the rest of the world. The department did not set a timetable for completing the assessment or estimate how many additional visas could be revoked.
