A series of billboards mocking California Governor Gavin Newsom appeared across the state this week, accusing the Democrat of presiding over record gas prices, crime and homelessness. The outdoor ads, whose sponsors have not been disclosed, feature slogans such as “I destroyed CA with my bad ideas” and have rapidly spread on social media. The campaign coincides with fresh attacks from President Donald Trump, who on 21 August claimed Newsom is “destroying the once Great State of California” and vowed to “save” it. Trump’s remarks amplified a long-running feud between the two politicians and fed speculation about their respective roles in future national elections. Despite the negative advertising, recent polling suggests Newsom’s confrontational stance toward Trump may be boosting his standing among Democratic voters. CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten said Friday that 75 percent of California Democrats are now enthusiastic about a potential Newsom presidential bid, a 40-point jump from 2023. Neither Newsom’s office nor the billboard sponsors responded to requests for comment. The governor, who is midway through his second term, is widely viewed as a possible contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination.
