A new CNN survey finds that 63% of Republican voters now "strongly approve" of President Donald Trump’s performance five months into his second term, the highest level recorded for any GOP president at a comparable point since at least the Reagan era. CNN Senior Data Reporter Harry Enten said the figure marks a ten-point jump from July 2017, when strong approval for Trump stood at 53%, and eclipses prior benchmarks such as George W. Bush’s 59% and Ronald Reagan’s post-assassination-attempt surge. Including those who "somewhat approve," overall Republican approval of the president approaches 90%. Enten noted that Trump’s popularity continues to confer electoral advantages: more than 95% of candidates backed by the president won Republican primaries in the 2020, 2022 and 2024 cycles, reinforcing the political risk for GOP lawmakers who break with him.
