A new survey by progressive research firm Data for Progress finds that 53% of Republican voters would support President Donald Trump seeking a third term in 2028, despite the U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment limiting presidents to two elected terms. The poll questioned 1,247 likely voters during the week of Aug. 24 and was first reported by Semafor. Support for a Trump 2028 bid is concentrated among Republicans; 91% of Democrats and 77% of independents said he should not run again. Overall, 86% of Democrats and 77% of independents backed keeping the two-term limit, compared with 52% of Republicans. Speculation about a third term has circulated since Trump’s 2024 reelection. The president has showcased $50 “Trump 2028” hats and told NBC’s “Meet the Press” earlier this year, “I’m not joking,” when asked about the idea. In January, Rep. Andy Ogles, a Tennessee Republican, introduced a constitutional amendment that would allow Trump—but not other living two-term presidents—to seek another term. Any change would require two-thirds majorities in both chambers of Congress and ratification by three-quarters of the states.
