Federal campaign-finance filings show the Democratic National Committee has directed more than $15 million this year to cover outstanding liabilities from Vice-President Kamala Harris’s 2024 presidential bid, which ended with a multimillion-dollar shortfall after her defeat by Donald Trump. The arrangement, disclosed in reports reviewed by outlets including the New York Times and Axios, was negotiated when the Harris campaign shut down and transferred its remaining obligations to the party. Harris has continued to solicit donations earmarked for retiring the debt, according to the filings. The payments have strained the committee’s balance sheet ahead of the 2026 mid-term cycle. As of 31 July, the DNC reported $13.9 million in cash on hand, compared with the Republican National Committee’s $84.3 million. Party officials have not said when they expect the Harris liabilities to be fully cleared.
