Northern California Republican Doug LaMalfa faced a raucous reception at his first in-person town hall in Chico since 2017. About 500 constituents packed an Elks Lodge on 11 Aug., booing and chanting over the congressman as he defended former President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” health-care plan. Attendees accused the measure of slashing Medicaid and threatening rural hospitals; LaMalfa insisted it creates a multibillion-dollar rural-hospital fund and limits benefits to eligible recipients. He fielded further hostile questions on wildfire recovery, veterans’ care and U.S. support for Israel before holding a similarly tense meeting in Red Bluff. Two nights later in Dallas, Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s town hall was interrupted when BlazeTV host Sara Gonzales shouted that the lawmaker was a “fake” and a “spoiled rich kid from Missouri.” Police escorted Gonzales out as supporters and opponents traded expletives; Crockett resumed the event once order was restored. The back-to-back disruptions highlight the volatility greeting members of Congress during the August recess, with lawmakers from both parties confronting profane criticism over health policy, immigration and other hot-button issues as the 2026 midterm campaign looms.
