U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has revoked the security clearances of 37 current and former intelligence officials, asserting in a published memorandum that the group “abused the public trust by politicizing and manipulating intelligence” and, in some cases, leaking classified information. The officials, many of whom served under Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama, were not provided individual evidence for the accusations, and it remains unclear how many still held active clearances. The move deepens a broader personnel purge inside the national-security apparatus. Earlier this month the Federal Bureau of Investigation dismissed five veteran agents without public explanation, a step whistle-blower attorney Mark Zaid condemned as a “despicable” politically motivated campaign. According to CBS News reporting, some of those agents had worked on investigations involving former President Trump or the January 6 probe. Internal resistance is surfacing. Acting National Security Agency Director William J. Hartman asked to review the evidence against at least one official before the clearance was pulled, but Gabbard declined, people familiar with the exchange said. Former CIA Director William J. Burns warned in The Atlantic that the dismissals amount to retribution that could weaken America’s ability to manage global risks. Gabbard, appointed by President Trump, has separately told conservative media she intends to “root out” intelligence personnel she believes advanced partisan agendas. Critics on Capitol Hill say the accelerating removals imperil institutional independence and may drive experienced analysts out of government at a time of heightened geopolitical tension.
