President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to dismiss Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook unless she resigns, intensifying the administration’s pressure on the U.S. central-bank official. Speaking with reporters, Trump said, “I’ll fire her if she doesn’t resign. What she did was bad,” citing allegations that Cook committed mortgage fraud by declaring two separate homes as her primary residence. The accusation was outlined in an Aug. 15 letter from Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte urging Attorney General Pam Bondi to open an investigation. Cook, who joined the Fed’s Board of Governors in 2022 and whose term runs until 2038, has rejected the claims. She said in a statement earlier this week that she has “no intention of being bullied to step down” and is assembling documentation to address what she called questions about a four-year-old mortgage application filed before she joined the central bank. Trump’s comments cap several days of escalating moves against Cook, including public calls for her resignation and reports that the Justice Department has asked Fed Chair Jerome Powell to remove her. Last week the White House nominated Council of Economic Advisers Chair Stephen Miran to fill the seat left open by Adriana Kugler’s Aug. 8 departure. Should Cook exit, Trump would gain another opportunity to shape the seven-member Fed board as policymakers weigh the prospect of a September interest-rate cut and as the administration narrows its list of contenders to succeed Chair Powell when his term ends in May 2026.
